Watermelon isn’t just a refreshing summer snack — it’s also the perfect way to sneak in some hands-on learning!
This August 3rd, celebrate National Watermelon Day with a mix of tasty fun and STEM-based curiosity.
🍉 Watermelon STEM Activities:
1. Watermelon Sink or Float? (Density & Buoyancy Experiment)
Ask your kids: Will a whole watermelon sink or float in water?
Fill a bathtub or large bin with water, then try it!
Why it works: Watermelons are mostly water, but their density and air-filled rind help them float. Try different sizes or compare to other fruit!
2. Watermelon Seed Estimation Challenge
Before slicing, have everyone guess: How many seeds are in this watermelon?
Cut it open, scoop the seeds, and count together.
Add math: graph results, calculate averages, or compare seedless vs seeded.
3. Seed Catapult Engineering (Simple Machines + Force)
Use craft sticks, rubber bands, a spoon, and a watermelon seed to build a mini catapult.
See how far your seed can fly — measure the distance and try adjusting angles!
Make it a contest: which design launches seeds the farthest?
🍉 Easy Watermelon Slush Recipe

🎉 However you celebrate, Watermelon Day is a sweet reminder that learning and fun can go hand in hand — especially with a juicy slice in hand!
