Sweet Science: STEM Experiments You Can Do with Chocolate Chip Cookies

August 3, 2025

If you needed an excuse to buy a pack of cookies today — here you go! It’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Day (Aug 4). And if your kids are like mine and love cookies and doing experiments, here’s your permission slip to turn snack time into science time.

We’re keeping it simple — minimal prep, no fancy equipment, and yes, you get to eat the results.

1. Cookie Dunk Experiment

How long can a cookie be dunked in milk before it falls apart?

  • What you need: A few chocolate chip cookies (different brands if you want to compare), a timer, and a cup of milk.
  • How to do it: Have your kid dunk each cookie for 1-second intervals, then 2, then 3… see which cookie holds up the longest before it breaks.
  • Why it’s cool: Teaches observation, consistency, and the scientific method — plus, it’s hilarious watching cookies disintegrate mid-dunk.

2. Density Test: Sink or Float?

Cookies are heavier than water, right? Not always.

  • What you need: A bowl of water and different types of cookies (crunchy vs. soft, mini vs. regular).
  • How to do it: Drop each one in and predict if they’ll sink or float.
  • Why it’s cool: You can talk about air pockets, density, and absorption. (But honestly, it's just fun watching cookies go rogue.)

3. Melting Point Madness

Ever wonder why some chocolate chips melt and others don’t?

  • What you need: Chocolate chip cookies with different types of chips (milk chocolate, semi-sweet, mini chips, etc.)
  • How to do it: Microwave each one for 5–10 seconds and compare how the chips melt.
  • Why it’s cool: You can talk about different ingredients and melting points — and then eat the evidence.

4. The Great Cookie Stack Challenge

How many cookies can you stack before they fall?

  • What you need: Cookies
  • How to do it: Set a timer and see how many cookies your kid can stack in 60 seconds — then try again with different cookie types.
  • Why it’s cool: This one sneaks in motor skills, balance, and problem-solving. And when the tower topples? Snack time.

Final Thoughts:

You don’t need a lab or a PhD to teach your kids STEM. Sometimes all it takes is a chocolate chip cookie and a little curiosity.

So go ahead — turn snack time into science time. Worst case scenario? You eat cookies together. Best case? You accidentally raised a tiny food scientist.
