How to Pick A Summer Camp in 5 Steps

How to Choose the Right Summer Camp in 5 Easy Steps

Updated for today’s families — because picking a summer camp should feel exciting, not overwhelming.

Summer camp season always seems to sneak up fast. One minute you’re just getting through the school year, and the next you’re staring at a long list of camp options wondering how you’re supposed to choose.

Sports camps, art camps, theater camps, STEM camps, church camps, outdoor camps, full-day camps, half-day camps — there are so many choices that it can feel impossible to know where to start.

The good news? You do not have to find the “perfect” camp. You just need to find a camp that fits your child, your schedule, and your budget. Here are five simple steps to help make the process easier.

1. Start with the type of camp your child is ready for

First, think about what kind of camp experience makes the most sense for your child right now. Are you looking for a day camp or an overnight camp?

For many kids, day camp is the easiest place to start. It helps children get used to being away from home, following a schedule, making new friends, and trying new activities — all while still coming home at the end of the day.

Overnight camp can be an amazing experience too, but it is usually a better fit for kids who are already comfortable being away from home and ready for more independence. If your child is new to camp, a half-day or full-day program is often the best first step.

2. Choose a camp that matches your child’s personality and interests

This is where camp can get really fun. There truly is something for almost every kind of kid — dance, sports, theater, science, animals, art, gaming, nature, cooking, gymnastics, music and more.

Ask your child what sounds exciting to them. Then think beyond just what they already love. Camp can also be a great chance to try something new in a low-pressure way.

The goal is not to pick the camp that sounds best on paper. It is to pick one that feels like a good fit for your child’s energy, confidence level, attention span, and interests. A quieter child might love art or animals. A high-energy child may do great in sports, dance, or outdoor adventure camp. Know your kid — that matters more than trends.

3. Be realistic about budget, location, and schedule

Camp pricing can vary a lot, and so can the hours, add-on fees, and driving distance. Before you get too attached to a camp, make sure it works for your real life.

Look at the full picture:

  • Is it half-day or full-day?
  • Does it offer early drop-off or late pickup?
  • How far is the drive?
  • Are meals included or do you need to pack lunch?
  • Are there extra fees for supplies, field trips, or registration?

Sometimes the “cheaper” camp ends up costing more once you add everything up. Other times, paying a little more for a camp that better fits your schedule can save you stress all summer long.

4. Ask the questions that actually matter

Once you narrow down your list, do not be afraid to ask questions. A good camp should be happy to tell you how things work and help you feel comfortable before you register.

Here are some smart questions to ask:

  • What ages is this camp best suited for?
  • What is the camper-to-staff ratio?
  • How are staff hired, screened, and trained?
  • What does a typical day look like?
  • How do you handle homesickness, anxiety, or behavior issues?
  • What is your pickup and drop-off process?
  • Are snacks or lunch included?
  • What should campers bring each day?
  • What is your refund or cancellation policy?
  • Can families attend an open house or tour first?

You can also ask other parents for honest feedback. Sometimes the best insight comes from someone whose child has already been there.

5. Register early once you find a good fit

The best camps can fill quickly, especially popular weeks like early summer, themed weeks, and specialty camps.

If you find a camp that checks your main boxes — good fit, good schedule, reasonable cost, and a child who feels excited about it — go ahead and reserve your spot.

Many camps offer early registration discounts, sibling savings, or limited-time specials, so signing up sooner can sometimes save money too.

A quick reminder:

You are not trying to create a “perfect summer.” You are just trying to choose experiences your child will enjoy, learn from, and remember.

A great summer camp can build confidence, independence, friendships, and new skills — and it can also give kids something to look forward to all season long.

Take a breath, trust your instincts, and start with what fits your family best.
