DIY Summer Camp at Home
Create a fun, flexible summer camp experience right in your own backyard.
Not every family plans to send their kids to a traditional summer camp — and even if your kids are attending camp for a few weeks, there are still plenty of days at home to fill with fun.
That’s where a DIY summer camp can come in. With a little creativity and planning, you can create your own themed camp experience right at home.
The best part? It can be as structured or relaxed as you want it to be — and it doesn’t have to cost much at all.
Start by getting everyone excited
A little excitement goes a long way. Give your camp a name and make it official!
Many families call theirs something simple like "Camp [Your Last Name]", but you can also get creative. Let the kids help pick the name, design a logo, or even come up with camp rules.
A fun kickoff activity is making camp t-shirts. Kids can decorate plain shirts with fabric markers, paint, or tie-dye. It instantly makes the experience feel special.
Decide who will participate
Your DIY camp can be as small or large as you want.
Some families run camp just for their own kids, while others create a small neighborhood or friend group camp.
One popular option is a parent co-op camp. Each parent hosts one day of activities for all the kids. That way everyone shares the work — and everyone gets a few days off during the week.
Even partnering with just one other family can make the experience more fun for kids.
Choose your camp dates and schedule
DIY camp works best when you choose a schedule that fits your family.
You might run camp:
- One day a week
- Every morning for a week
- Several themed days throughout the summer
- A full "camp week" during school break
Some families prefer a structured daily schedule, while others like a more relaxed approach with a few planned activities and lots of free play. Either way works — the goal is fun.
Pick fun daily themes
Themes make planning activities much easier. Each day can revolve around a specific topic that guides games, crafts, snacks, and learning.
You might read books related to the theme, do themed crafts, cook a snack, play games, and finish with an outdoor activity.
Keeping a notebook or binder with activity ideas helps you stay organized and makes it easy to reuse ideas next summer.
Think beyond your backyard
Field trips can easily become part of your DIY camp too.
Some great local options include:
- Libraries
- Parks and playgrounds
- Nature trails
- Museums
- Splash pads
- Community events
Keep an eye on the Macaroni KID events calendar and newsletters for family-friendly activities happening around town.
You can also include learning activities, simple chores, service projects, and free play time as part of your camp schedule.
